How many games are there in a set of tennis?
Understanding sets, and tiebreakers in tennis
A standard tennis set consists of a series of games
played to determine a winner. To win a set
, a player must win at least six games and have a two-game lead over their opponent. If both players or teams are tied at 5-5, they continue to play until one side gains a two-game advantage, ultimately securing the set with the set score 7-5. But incase the both of them are tied at 6-6, then a tie breaker is played.
A tiebreaker
in tennis is a special game played to decide a set. Players take turns serving for one point each. The server begins by serving one point from the deuce side of the (right) court, then the opponent serves two points from the ad (left) court. This pattern continues until one player reaches 7 points or more with a margin of at least 2 points. So a player can win a tiebreaker with the score 7-5 but not 7-6, they need to lead player needs to win another point after it to win the tiebreaker.
Note:Grand Slam tournaments and the Olympic Games from 2024 will play a 10-point tiebreaker instead of a 7-point tiebreaker
